Today began with much anticipation since the students were introduced to their supervisor and to the children in their class. The big eyes of the children said it all; who WERE these students from the USA? Are they real? Can we play with them? Why must I repeat my words to them?!
Each GS student is with one or two others in the same school (5 different schools in all). For more of a "one-on-one" experience, we have placed one GS student in one class so there will be more interaction between the GS student and the children or the main teacher. Everyone stepped into their new role with much grace and with a smile on their face. It is 2:00 now and they have returned for the afternoon to their newfound little friends. Tonight, after a full day of assisting the teachers and students, they are guaranteed a sound night's sleep!
For their days of service, their usual schedule is as follows: drop off before 8:00 at the high school (Lycée Kastler) where their host sibling studies; walk to the pre-school location by 8:30; classroom activities until around 11:30; return to Kastler for lunch with hosts; back to the classroom by 1:30; return to Kastler around 4:15. On certain days, our students will go to class for the last hour of class from 5-6. Most days, they will simply go home with their host.
On Saturday evening, all 24 of the GS and Kastler students went out bowling. It was a great ice-breaker. Most of the students visited Guebwiller and/or the surrounding area on Sunday with their host family. They are already getting their bearings!
We will see them daily, of course, and check in... But, so far, so good. They are a fine group of young adults. Thank you for entrusting them to us!
